Acoustics 2012 in Nantes April 23-27

Acoustics 2012 joining the 11th Congrès Français d’Acoustique and the 2012 Annual IOA Meeting will be held in Nantes, France from 23 to 27 April 2012. The Congress is co-organised by the French Acoustical Society (SFA) and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) from UK. This congress is also supported by the European Acoustics Association (EAA). Acoustics 2012 will be held at the Cité Internationale des Congrès de Nantes (La Cité – Nantes Events Center).

Session AA-S01 "Acoustics of Offices" was held April 25th and was chaired by Yoann Le-Muet, Saint-Gobain Ecophon France.

The papers presented were:
- "Acoustic of open spaces - Overview of standardization work" (Le Muet)
-" Efficiency of an acoustic table screen between two work stations in open plan offices" (Schmich et al)
- "Objective and Subjective Assess-ment of Disturbance by Office Noise - Relevance of the Use of the Speech Transmission Index" (Ebissou et al)

Julian Treasure is the chair of the Sound Agency, a firm that advises worldwide businesses -- offices, retailers, hotels -- on how to use sound. He asks us to pay attention to the sounds that surround us. How do they make us feel: productive, stressed, energized, acquisitive?
Treasure is the author of the book Sound Business and keeps a blog by the same name that ruminates on aural matters (and offers a nice day-by-day writeup of TEDGlobal 2009). In the early 1980s, Treasure was the drummer for the Fall-influenced band Transmitters.

Stonehenge design inspired by sounds?

American researcher Steven Waller states that music could have been an inspiration for the design of Stonehenge. Mr Waller is an expert in "archaeoacoustics", looking at the role sound might have played in ancient cultures.

Waller says “my theory is that the ancient Britons, when they were hearing two pipers in a field, were experiencing sound wave interference patterns, where in certain locations as you walked around the pair of pipers, you would hear loud or quiet zones.”
