THOUGHTS ABOUT OPEN PLAN SPACES STANDARD 3382-3

Valtteri%20Hongisto.jpg

This is an interview with PhD Valtteri Hongisto, Senior Research Scientist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and Adjunct Professor at Helsinki University of Technology.
He has performed a lot of acoustic research and has been involved in the creation of standards and guidelines, for example the Acoustic Classification of Spaces in buildings SFS 5907. Also he is one of the writers of the coming Finnish Classification on indoor climate.

Valtteri mentioned that the ISO standard 3382-3 will only deal with open-plan office acoustics and not with open plans in general, like in schools, libraries or hospitals. The focus will be on spacial attenuation and speech intelligibility. By doing that we can judge the performance at any distance from the speaker.

Alarms in hospitals – a chaotic sound environment

IntensiveCare.jpg
The use of alarms in hospitals was discussed intensively during the two days session "Healthcare Acoustics & Speech Privacy".

A study presented by S. Okcu, College of Architecture, GaTech, states that a patient in an ICU can be surrounded by up to 33 different alarms from medical equipment. Not only are the alarms disturbing to the patients, they also make the task for the staff to detect and analyse them more demanding.

20060427_busch%5B1%5D.jpg Ilene Bush-Vishniac
"The alarms are of utmost importance, but do we really need all these alarms?" This is a question asked by Dr. Busch-Vishniac, MacMaster University (formerly from Johns Hopkins University) who was one of the presenters at the conference. And the question is relevant; in nine out of ten times no action is taken when an alarm goes off, except for turning the alarm off.

Discussions in the corridor

Influence of noise on patient’s sleep

Noise levels in hospitals are typically more than 15 dB(A) higher than target values given in guidelines (for example target values from WHO and the US Environmental Protection Agency). Furthermore, noise is often one of the top complaints from staff and patients. This is concluded in a review made by Hui Xie and Jian Kang at the University of Sheffield.

Simplified room acoustic measurement

torhalm.jpg Tor Halmrast

Mr Tor Halmrast from Norway had a very interesting lecture about how to measure reverberation time, and how important it is to be a good “cougher”.

Tor works with music and acoustics. When he is on holiday, he often finds interesting rooms what he wants to measure. To measure room acoustic parameters today requires a lot of equipment that you seldom bring with you. That is why Mr Halmrast bought a small Wav-recorder and some balloons.

The end of the second day and it's time to head back to the hotel.

It's 30 degrees and sunny so we choose to walk instead of taking the metro as we've been indoors allday. We wait to cross the traffic - it's noisy with horns beeping, busy with mopeds screeching by and hot but there is much to enjoy. Cutting through the backstreets we see some lovely buildings, markets and wary of crossing the busy roads even on a green man.

It's become quieter and we are conscious that Paris families are home eating while we walk past the open windows. Closer to the hotel children are out playing and enjoying a splash in the nearby fountains. It's a comfort to be living in a quieter area........

Why is Odeon at Acoustics' 08?

Claus Christensen works with research and development of the room acoustics software, Odeon. Odeon is a tool for room acoustic design and it helps you predicting the acoustic quality of spaces. This modelling software is also an auralisation tool allowing you to listen to how it will sound. Claus sees acoustic conferences as indeed important for meeting potential customers, receiving input from users and to upgrade his own knowledge and follow the latest development.

Why do we need standards?

katrin_bergmark.jpg
Katrin Bergmark, Concept Developer - Healthcare, Ecophon Sweden.

This question formed the introduction to the overview of acoustic standards in Europe presented by Katrin Bergmark, Concept Developer at Ecophon in Sweden. Katrin talked about the current situation regarding sound in health care premises. Hospitals are often experienced as very noisy, leading to health effects on both patients and staff. In order to create a supporting sound environment we should aim to:
- secure privacy
- lower the noise levels
- facilitate good communication

And develop standards accordingly...

Our morning walk to the conference

June 30, 2008

The conference has begun. Some impressions so far...

Acoustics' 08, the first day

Erling Nilsson, Acoustic Specialist, Ecophon.

Some reflections on the afternoon's session about acoustic for open-plan spaces. It was interesting to note that there exists some consencus concerning evaluation of the acoustical conditions in open-plan spaces. Measures like DL2 and DLf were frequently used in the presentations as well as methods for transforming these values into user friendly descriptors like e.g. radius of comfort. A good start of the conference and it will be really interesting to take part of coming events at one of the largest conferences ever.

Goodbye Madrid and thank you ICA

impression%20ICA.png

Perceived loudness hardly decrease with distance! From ICA 2007 in Madrid.

Mike Barron from the University of Bath, UK, asks himself “when is a concert hall too quiet”? Sound levels in concert halls decrease with distance, but assessment of subjective loudness indicates that loudness judgement is more or less independent of distance from the stage. This leads to the conclusion that listeners compensate their judgement of loudness on the basis of what they see. So people at the back of the hall may compensate for the distance from the source!

Sustainable design and acoustics at ICA 2007 in Madrid

Alexis Kurtz from Arup Acoustics in New York presented a paper on the issue of sustainable and/or green buildings. She exposed a valuable overview of various green building rating systems globally. Sustainable design covers more than just environmental aspects – it also includes economic and societal benefits, she claims. Acoustics is often not included, leading to poor acoustic conditions in green buildings.

The new Dutch Practical Guideline NPR 3438 was recently published and released. This guideline (or standard) covers the field of acoustic ergonomics and gives target values for the room acoustical environment in relation to disturbance of concentration and communication. NPR 3438 can be used for building and housing projects covering building types like offices, schools, sports halls, hospitals etc. Ruud Geerligs from SBR (Building Research Institute) in Netherlands presented a paper on this new Dutch guideline at ICA 2007 in Madrid (19th International Congress on Acoustics) together with Carsten Svensson from Saint-Gobain Ecophon. Ruud highlighted the background and the content of the Practical Guideline in one of the sessions.

Modern conditions for modern teaching and good classroom acoustics reduce working stress! Presentations at ICA 2007 in Madrid.

Markus_Gerhart.jpg
Markus Oberdörster and Gerhart Tiesler

The acoustic environment of classrooms has a significant impact on new modern teaching scenarios. Today, in many countries, education and teaching is becoming more student centred and differentiated. Classrooms that might have worked well for decades might have to be acoustically “updated”. Markus Oberdörster from Ecophon Germany, together with Gerhart Tiesler from ISF University of Bremen in Germany, spent years investigating the room acoustic conditions of a large amount of German classrooms. Markus talked about acoustics and teaching styles, but also questioned the relevance of Sabine’s formula in non-diffuse conditions and reverberation time as the only acoustic descriptor to use. Gerhart took this further by revealing data on how poor room acoustics has an impact on teacher’s workload, i.e. heart rate as stress indicator. The consequence of acoustically good classrooms is reducing the stressor “noise”, giving higher activation, reducing fatigue and potentially better learning results by the students.

"New descriptors for open offices are needed – NOW!"

Alternative room acoustic descriptors for open offices
- progresses in standardization
Pierre Chigot, Saint-Gobain Ecophon SA, France

Pierre%20Chigot.jpg
Pierre Chigot, Saint-Gobain Ecophon France

Pierre Chigot explained us about the limitations regarding the use of Reverberation Time for acoustical assessment of open-plan offices. Large variance between measurement positions at low frequencies and poor reactivity to changes in the acoustics due to the lack of diffusivity of the room is often seen.

As potential new acoustic descriptors in open offices the sound propagation from workstation to workstation, rate of spatial decay per doubling of distance (DL2) was suggested. DL2 has originally been applied to workrooms (through EN ISO 14257).
DL2 seems to be a consistent and reliable descriptor of open plan office acoustics and is now included in sound quality standards for buildings. A standard for field measurements of DL2 is needed, taking into consideration the physical characteristics of open plan offices, as well as speech characteristics (increased energy contents at low frequencies, voice levels, raised hearing sensitivity at high frequencies, etc).

"Determination of acoustic conditions in open offices and suggestions for acoustic classification"
Valtteri Hongisto, Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, Turku, Finland

DL2 and “radius of distraction” as the future acoustic descriptors in open offices?

Speech privacy and the distraction efficiency of surrounding speech can be described by the speech intelligibility between workstations. Valtteri Hongisto stated that previous laboratory and field studies have concentrated on two neighbouring workstations while examination should instead concern the whole office space since noise complaints are not restricted to the nearest workstation. A new method to determine the acoustical conditions of the whole office space, including both short and long distances from the speaker was introduced. Through measurements in 15 offices Dl2 and “radius of distraction” were determined as principal descriptors. The measurements included background noise level, spatial decay of Speech
Transmission Index, STI, and spatial decay of A-weighted sound level of speech.

"What is sustainable acoustics"

The world population has been multiplied by 1000 in 10.000 years.

It's obvious that if we want to safeguard the quality of living for future generations, we need to show environmental awareness and take meausres already today. A definition of sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

“Acoustics ad the UK perspective on sustainable acoustics “
Peter Rogers - Cole Jarman Associates

According to Peter Rogers, associate at Cole Jarman Associates, sustainable acoustics is about appplying the principles of acoustics to remove the problems that obstruct a “One planet” or “sustainable” solution. During his presentation he showed 3 ways representing the UK approach regarding sustainability and acoustics.

• Regulations increasing (BB93)
BREEAM assessments (download the factsheet)
• Code for sustainable homes

assesment%20of%20performance%20of%20buildings.bmp
Rogers gave an overview of the situation in the UK and explained about the BREEAM's assessment for the performance of buildings. His answer to the question "What can acoustician do?", was as following.
• educate themselves and those in other disciplines about what we know so far about human aural effects on comfort, health and happiness
• perform research
• create benchmarks
• raise awareness
• share progress

"How you improve speech privacy in open-plan offices"

Reported from ICA Madrid

John%20Bradley.jpg John Bradley - National Research Council, Montreal

Better speech privacy in open-plan offices can be most consistently achieved by a combination of quantitative design procedures and validation measurements, says John Bradley. This has not usually been done in the past because of the lack of convenient design and measurement tools. While signal-to-noise type measures such as the Articulation Index have been used to indicate the amount of speech privacy in North American offices, often Speech Transmission Index values have been used in European offices.

BNAM 2006: Workshop on Classroom Acoustics

During the Baltic-Nordic Acoustics Meeting in Gothenburg this November a workshop on classroom acoustics took place which I had the pleasure to organise. The workshop started with a presentation of four prepared papers. Among the papers, Nils-Åke Andersson presented the planning of an extensive study of the acoustics in classrooms initiated by Ecophon. In this project several classrooms are investigated both in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany. A large amount of data will be collected. Different types of ceiling treatments are tested and subjective and objective evaluations of the classrooms are carried out. At the workshop I presented preliminary results from a listening test on speech recorded in some of the classrooms.
The last part of the workshop was devoted an open discussion. Acoustical conditions in open-plan premises for education were an item that many of the participants took an active interest in.
The presentations will be soon be presented here

conference on health care buildings

Last week, I visited a Health care conference in the UK, London to be exact, called Delivering community healthcare buildings.
At this conference, relevant healthcare design experts and key architects in this sector got together to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities involved in the design of a number of different community healthcare buildings.

Charlotte Ruben, representing White Arkitekter from Sweden presented the delegates a new attitude towards designing Health care premises, one in which the sound and healing environment is the main aim. It will be very interesting to follow the mega project she and her colleagues are working on: it's the design of the new Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. Expectations are high since this is going to be the state of the art. 1 biliion Euro's, 300.000 m2.
The high awareness for quality in Sweden will hopefully result in good room acoustic discussions. To be continued...

Two days of Room Acoustics

The "live" reports from the Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar are now done, as some of the attendees go home and others move on to Copenhagen for dinner, opera and a guided tour of Det Kongelige Teater.

Please take a look at some of the things that have taken place during these days in Helsingborg and Hyllinge.

"How to specify Acoustic Design"

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar

Örjan Johansson, Luleå University of Technology, had the pleasure of giving the closing lecture: Sound quality of indoor environments. Speaking about Acoustic design he invited the audience on a trip that took them from Johansson's office to the ghosts in his neighbours' bedroom.

Summing up, Johansson gave a couple of insights on "How to specify a good acoustic design". Listen to his concluding words about the last slide.

"Exchange of Knowledge"

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar

Julie DockrellYesterday Julie Dockrell, University of London, gave a speech titled School acoustics - from science via guidelines to practice. Being a psychologist, she looks at acoustics from a different perspective. She thinks the seminar is “an excellent learning experience”.

“The exchange of knowledge between different disciplines is very important. It helps you ask better questions. It also gives me an opportunity to discuss with acousticians of where psychology might or might not fit in. One acoustician said to me ‘Why do we need to bother about psychology?’. So an event like this is a way of helping other people to understand human behaviour.”

You’re from the academic world. Many attendees are working with this practically, consultants in room acoustics for example. What do you think about the balance between these dimensions here?

“Some of the presentations have been practical in orientation in terms of what you do in these kinds of context. People are also very good at asking real-world questions so I think that’s quite useful” says Julie Dockrell.

Case Study: Corridors

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar
Jasper Cole

Jasper Cole, Trelleborg Building Systems, presented a case study of a corridor (length 26 meters) that was modified in terms of the amount of absorption in the ceiling, placement of absorption as well as the effect of diffusing/scattering objects. Just before him Jian Kang, University of Sheffield, had introduced some of his key findings about acoustics and long spaces.

The issues related to long spaces such as corridors are well known, says Cole. But sometimes not dealt with as thoroughly as other space types. Listen to the interview with Jasper Cole.

Struggling to Communicate in a Noisy Cafeteria

No, this is not an observation from the coffee break. But we have all been there - trying to have a conversation in a bar, restaurant or crowded hotel lobby. And this is exactly the situation John Culling of Cardiff University focuses his research on.

Reverberation, says Culling, has a detrimental effect on listeners' perceptual segregation of speech from interfering sounds, such as competing speech. He thinks this effect has been less well explored than the distorting effect of reverberation on speech, but it may be very significant in spaces designed for social interaction.

Listen to John Culling's conclusions from the presentation.

Media Coverage of the Seminar

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar

The seminar has attracted media attention in Sweden. For example, the regional radio has been on place to do interviews and the local newspaper "Helsingborgs Dagblad" today publishes a short article about the "140 sound experts" gathering in southern Sweden (wrong link).

"Create Sound Policies"

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar

marcjanssen1.jpg

Marc Janssen of Ecophon (abstract) urged the participants to start working with Sound Policies.

Marc Janssen

“We have to put requirements on paper. Standards help a lot. Use them to create sound policies, a tool to maintain or guarantee the quality of a workplace concept. It can among other things be a discussion model between architects, consultants and end users.”

Ecophon has helped define sound policies in a number of large companies. Ericsson, Danske Post, Deloitte and Essent are some examples. Generally they include a description of the room, the goals of the room and both quality risks and demands, including STI, DL2, AC, PI and Rt.

A voice from the audience agreed with Janssen’s conclusion about the importance of defining sound requirements for single rooms or room types.

“Get acousticians involved at an early stage, rather than bringing them in to pick up the pieces when everything has gone wrong.”

"When I really want to think I go to the bathroom"

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar

James West

James West of Johns Hopkins University (abstract) entered the stage to bring focus to the problem of noise in hospitals. In this interview with him, he says that “we’d better be paying more attention to noise in hospitals”.

He’s met people that have said “when I really want to think I go to the bathroom” because that’s the only place where it is quiet. Others tell him that they need to go home to log data.

The problem has been there for a long time. Certainly some professionals have known about it. But it hasn’t been known widely enough, thinks West. With his team he is now trying to identify the noise sources. “For the most part it’s people communicating”, says James West.

Listen to the interview.

“Change focus – noise is not a killer”

sorenpeterlund.jpg

Reported live from Ecophon 5th International Acousticians' Seminar

Søren Peter Lund, Senior Researcher at the National Institute of Occupational Health in Denmark, was the keynote speaker at the seminar. He started talking about the growing concern about noise in the society, showing a model that basically treats noise as a toxic compound.

Lund’s view on models like that was clear. Noise is not a killer, said Lund, but serious aspects of noise are overlooked. It is for example a substantial cause of loss of motivation and creativity. Focus should change, he concluded, one important reason being the change in workplaces towards more cognitive work.

The questions after Lund’s keynote speech included one about noise in open offices. Listen to his response.
