After a full 50 years, Slovakia has a new acoustic standard!

2024-06-17 by Peter Petrasko

Slovakia has a new STN 73 0527 acoustic standard that can finally improve conditions in schools!

The new updated STN 73 0527 acoustic standard deals with room acoustics. In schools, universities, and spaces used for cultural, sports, social and public purposes. It aims at ensuring better quality and healthier acoustic conditions.

New acoustic standard highlights

Regarding the new acoustic standard, our colleague from Ecophon Slovakia, Peter Petrasko highlights 3 main points below. These can contribute to higher quality conditions (not only) for children:

  • Unlike in the past, the new standard considers that the spaces can or will be used by disadvantaged people. Therefore, it is necessary to design and implement them in such a way that they suit the visually or hearing impaired. People with attention or communication disorders, who react more sensitively to noise and long reverberation time in the interior.
  • The focus is on rooms where the spoken word plays a vital role, for example classrooms, lecture halls, conference rooms, or courtrooms. According to the new standard, in addition to the reverberation time, it is also important to consider the speech intelligibility. This should be calculated while the space is fully occupied. Spaces intended for children’s education must be acoustically treated in such a way that they ensure quality conditions for pupils and teachers.
  • The standard also sets the highest permissible values of background noise, which also impacts the speech intelligibility. Such noise can come, for example, from internal technical equipment, but also from outside.
Peter Petrasko , Concept Developer – Ecophon Slovakia

“This topic is extremely important because the average noise level in schools surpasses 60dB, while sometimes reaches even higher level. We at Ecophon welcome the new standard as we continue working on improvement of acoustics conditions in schools and other public spaces.”
