American healthcare acoustics research presented at ICA 2019

2019-11-27 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Ilene Busch-Vishniac

Healthcare acoustics on the agenda What a privilege to attend ICA this year. Not only were we invited to a concert in the cathedral of Aachen but in the healthcare acoustics session, we had the opportunity to explore research from all over the world. Including 3 American papers on both noise reduction in neonatal care, […]

2019-06-21 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Internoise 2019, Madrid It’s all about money! Juan Negreira held a really inspiring presentation at Internoise 2019 – about how a room acoustic intervention in a restaurant lead to better income. One of our editors, Swedish Concept Developer Healthcare, Maria Quinn – had the opportunity to be present during a robot assisting the surgeon in the Operating Room. Here are her thoughts and reflections on the sound environment in such a specialized area. Robotic surgery Robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows doctors to perform many types […]

Diversity at Internoise 2019 – Top 3 presentations

2019-06-18 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Half way through Internoise 2019 in Madrid one thing is clear: It is a buffet of knowledge! From sessions on ‘Architectural and building acoustics’ to ‘Environmental noise’ to ‘Noise and health’ (and everything in between). Internoise, Euronoise, ICA etc. are always the places to go if you need new inspiration and today especially three really […]

New experimental methods shed light on sound field diffusion in reverberation chambers.

2019-03-10 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Sound energy flow reconstructed in the vicinity of an absorbing sample in a standardized (ISO 354:2003) reverberation chamber. The energy is predominantly flowing towards the absorber. Tangential flows can also be detected, due to the interaction between waves propagating from the source and other reflections of considerable amplitude (adapted from Nolan et al., 2019).

December 13th 2018 we had the privilege to attend a PhD defense at DTU. The work was done by Mélanie Nolan who for the last 3 years has been working intensely to investigate sound fields in the reverberation chamber. This article is touching upon some of the findings from the research. The influence of absorption […]

Acoustics affect staff in the OR

2019-01-21 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Introduction Sustainable working environments include good room acoustics but working in and operation room (OR) can be a challenge. Due to hygiene regulations and demands the surfaces are often hard and reflective and this leads to high sound pressure levels, bad speech clarity and long reverberation times. The Study At Hvidovre Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark […]

Bad acoustics – higher pulse, more medication

2018-10-23 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Healthcare and sound Some of us have tried to be sick in a hospital – most of us have tried to be relatives to a sick person in a hospital – and all of us have been affected by sound. Sometimes we are aware of it – sometimes we suffer without knowing it. This following […]

Short reverberation time in critical care is not enough

2018-10-09 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Short reverberation time does not do the whole trick in healthcare facilities, it´s the peaks that will wake the patients up! Out of our comfort zone When we are sick and feel bad – we seem to forget that just opening the door to a hospital makes us out of our comfort zone. Our system […]

Healthcare paradox and 5 tips

2018-09-27 by Mai-Britt Beldam

Traffic noise makes us sick The Danish Cancer Foundation has concluded less than 2 years ago that traffic noise can lead to breast cancer and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The Danish Ministry of Environment concluded at the same time that 500 Danes die every year because of traffic noise – because of diabetes, stress and cardio vascular […]
